The Historical Instruments Department offers students high quality professional studies in Baroque strings, harpsichord and fortepiano, recorder, traverso, Baroque oboe, Baroque trumpet, and period plucked instruments.
The University of Music Würzburg is one of the few German institutions with a regular Baroque Orchestra on Historical Instruments (BaHI). This ensemble collaborates with the annual Baroque opera production, orchestra projects and the biennial Days of Early Music.
Chamber music with various Baroque instruments and singers is taught by internationally recognized faculty, and frequent Master Classes on specialized topics such as improvisation and Baroque singing are presented by guest professors.
Students participate in the Bavarian Orchestra Academy Baroque and are frequent international prize winners and members of Baroque orchestras. Individual instruction is enriched by seminars in Historically Informed Performance and study excursions to historical instrument collections both at home and abroad.
A wide selection of historical instruments is available for student usage, including violins, viols, violone, natural horns and Baroque trombones.
