In 1987, he received first prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition for contemporary music.

Hussong has performed with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Musikfabrik Nordrhein-Westfalen, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Rundfunk Symphonieorchester Saarbrücken and Tokyo Shin Nippon Philharmonic, among others.

He is professor of accordion and chamber music at the Musikhochschule Würzburg.

In the category "Best Instrumentalist of the Year", Hussong was awarded the Echo Klassik Prize of the German Phono Academy in 1999. His solo CD with works by John Cage, released by DENON, was awarded "Best record of the year" in the same year.

T. Urbach in FonoForum 9 / 02: "The accordion is booming, especially in New Music, no question about that, and Stefan Hussong is one of the best interpreters. Here he places pieces by compositional greats (Hölszky, Berio, Gubaidulina) next to those by relative nobodies (Harada, Nordheim, Lim). This pays off because an astonishing level prevails. Beautiful!"
