Maria Schuppert studied medicine in Würzburg, Hanover, and San Francisco. She received her doctorate (Dr. med.) from the University of Würzburg in 1988.

Her school years and studies were accompanied by intensive musical activities, especially with the instruments recorder (young students Hermann-Zilcher-Conservatory Würzburg) and viola (Bavarian State Youth Orchestra, Doctors Orchestra Hannover).

  • 1993 - 1999 medical-scientific assistant at the Institute for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media with research on the biomechanics of the musician's hand and on central nervous music processing,
  • 2002 - 2008 Lecturer in music physiology and voice physiology at the Institute of Music at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences,
  • 2001 - 09/2014 Lecturer for Music Physiology and Musician's Medicine at the Detmold University of Music and
  • 2009 - 2014 professor and director of the Center for Musicians' Health at this university.
  • In addition, she has been teaching at the Music Academy of the City of Kassel "Louis Spohr" since 2013.
  • Since the winter semester 2014, Maria Schuppert has been representing the area of "Music & Health" with a focus on music physiology and musician's medicine at the HfM Würzburg.

Maria Schuppert is involved in teaching, consultation and research in the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of musician-specific stresses and diseases.

She is co-editor of the journal “Musikphysiologie und Musikermedizin” and member of the editorial board of the American journal "Medical Problems of Performing Artists". She has published numerous music physiology and musician medicine articles and book chapters.

She was a founding member, vice president from 2005 to 2011, and president from 2011 to 2017 of the German Society for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine (DGfMM e.V.).
