Fabian Bauer, born in Tübingen in 1992, studied German (teacher training) at the University of Stuttgart and school music, majoring in piano. He also completed a bachelor's programme in music theory with Siegfried Eipper at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. This was followed by a master's degree in music theory with Felix Diergarten at the University of Music Freiburg.

His research interests include the music of György Ligeti. For his thesis "Logic and Absurdity. On the interaction of language and affect with sound compositional techniques in György Ligeti's 'Aventures', he was awarded the Helene Rosenberg Prize for outstanding achievements in musicology in 2021. He is currently working on a dissertation on Anton Bruckner's secular vocal music as part of his doctorate in historical musicology under Felix Diergarten.
He has been teaching music theory at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart since the 2019/20 winter semester. Since the summer semester 2023, he has also been teaching aural training and music theory/composition at the Heidelberg University of Church Music and, since the winter semester 2023/24, also at the University of Music Würzburg, where he is working as a lecturer for special tasks in the academic year 2025/26.
